According to\u00a0Kristj\u00e1n J\u00f3nasson, curator at the Icelandic Institute of Natural History, this is\u00a0a fragment of gneiss, an metamorphic rock, most likely Precambrian\u00a0<\/span>in age\u00a0(at least\u00a0<\/span>541 million years old!<\/span>). It was probably transported from eastern Greenland, as glacial ice rafted debris\u00a0across the ocean floor. During explosive eruptions from Surtsey in 1963-1964 it was\u00a0incorporated into the tephra sequence. The ancient rock is now captured in the very young hydrothermally altered, dark grey, lapilli tuff.
