To properly record information about the core for later scientific use, the International Scientific Drilling Program (ICDP) inputs information into the Drilling Information System (DIS).

Some of the science team on Heimaey working on troubleshooting the DIS software. Once completed, core can be recorded in this system in 1 m increments. Each input in the DIS system will have information on the type of rock in that meter section and comments for interesting features therein.

In order to input them into the DIS and before imaging, core must be cut into sections of specific lengths and washed. Stations for each of these actions are shown here.
